The method involves using a scale frame (12) which is less than a marine chart or map and is provided with latitude and longitude scales corresp. to those on the chart or map, the frame being placed over the actual area on the chart or map. In the frame is fixed or releasably arranged a plate (10) provided with two strips which cross each other at right-angles and which gives the actual position at the point of intersection. The plate (10) has lines which give the distance and angles from the point of intersection.
