Process for converting a metal format in formic acid by means of electrolysis of the format in a cell with one anodic compartment, one cathode and at least one intermediary compartment separated from the first two by cationic membranes. The format is fed to the intermediary compartment whilst an acid is fed to the anodic compartment and to the cathode compartment an electrolytic able to form compounds with the metal cations of the salt format. On the passage of electrical current the cations migrate across the cationic membranes so that formic acid forms in the intermediary compartment whilst a metal cation compound of the format is formed in the cathode compartment.
