The plant comprises means 15 to heat the seawater, and a vacuum evaporator 10 for the heated water, including walls with a microporous membrane separating chambers 13 14 for the liquid phase and for the vapour and acting selectively to treat the saline compounds in the liquid phase and to permit passage of the vapour and a condenser for condensation by cooling of the vapour freed of saline components, which flows through the walls of the porous membrane.
