The subject of this invention is a machine for obtaining timber sections of regular shape from irregularly shaped logs or logs of small diameter. The machine basically comprises: - an inclined surface 3 on which lengths of logs 1 of predetermined length are collected; - a series of selfcentring units 7, where the lengths of logs 1 are sent by a conveyor 4, at which units each individual length of log 1 is positioned so that its lengthwise axis is exactly horizontal; - a pair of saws 20 that make ends in the length of log 1 precisely at right angles to the horizontal axis; - a pair of spike means 26, 27 which engage in the ends of the length of log 1 and are used to rotate it, at predetermined operating steps, about the horizontal axis; - and a saw tool 31 which makes the lengthwise cut along the length of log 1 held by the spike means 26, 27, in an operating sequence controlled by computer.
