Compost biofilter for reduction of foul-smelling, harmful and/or toxic gaseous emissions

The apparatus for the biological treatment of gas-phase emissions containing foul-smelling, harmful and/or toxic volatile compounds, a diagram of which is shown in drawing M, is based on the principle of adsorption and microbial breakdown on an organic compost-type matrix. The purification process takes place on the supporting matrix of the microbial biomass responsible for the bioxidation reactions of the substance undergoing treatment. The effluent to be treated Ef leaving the production cycle is drawn in by the fan Vp which blows it into the biological reactor (biofilter) BFc in which it passes through the said filter elements of organic matrix (compost) LFc on which the phenomena of adsorption and bioxidation take place. The gaseous flow once at the head of the reactor, is drawn off by the extractor fan Ve, downstream of which a continuous analyser Ac, controlling a three-way modulator valve, causes the gaseous effluent either to be relased into the atmosphere or recycled for completion of its purification.
