A device for cutting a part of a paper element 6, particularly a bank cheque, banker's draft or similar, it comprises a means of guiding 10 the paper element 6 towards a cutting position, means 26 for holding the element in this position, means 40, 41 for cutting the paper element 6 while it is in this position, these means of cutting 40, 41 being actuated at the moment the element 6 reaches the cutting position, this moment being detected by sensors 13 connected with the aforesaid means of guiding 10.
