ABSTRACTA method and an apparatus therefor for monitoring cardiacfunction in an animal or human subject including the stepsof: placing a first movement detecting transducer on thetorso, said transducer overlying at least part of twodiametrically opposed borders of the heart or great vessels:generating a signal indicative of the movement of the torsoportion subtended by the transducer, said signal including acardiac component comprising at least a segmental ventricularvolume waveform or a segmental aortic pressure pulsewaveform: and assessing cardiac function by monitoringchanges in said ventricular volume waveform or said aorticpressure pulse waveform.
