ENHANCED IN-SITU ELECTROCHEMICAL DEGRADATION OF ORGANIC CONTAMINANTS IN GROUNDWATER SYSTEMS

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA process for electrochemically degrading organiccontaminants in groundwater comprises embedding a gridwork of rods in the ground in the region wheregroundwater flows which contain the organiccontaminants. A voltage is applied to the plurality ofspace-apart oppositely charged rods to degradeelectrochemically such organic contaminants in thegroundwater. Sufficient voltage is applied across theplurality of oppositely charged rods to effect suchelectrochemical degradation. The process provides aneffective relatively inexpensive form of minimizing oreliminating organic contaminants in groundwater,particularly contaminants such as phenols and trichloro-ethylene.
