ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA device for measuring temperature in a liquid body includesa temperature sensing element integrally embedded in a thermallyinsulated matrix material, the matrix material being chemicallyresistant to the liquid whose temperature is to be measured, andhaving sufficient non-wetting and insulating properties toprovide a heat flow pattern from the liquid such that the matrixassumes the temperature of the liquid at a desired level belowthe surface, and to enable the temperature sensing element tomeasure and retain the temperature at the desired levelsufficiently long that it may be observed and/or recorded afterthe device is removed from the liquid. The device may beweighted to ensure that it assumes a position at the desiredlevel below the surface of the liquid, and a string or linesupports the device at the desired level for a time sufficientfor the temperature of the liquid at the desired level to betransferred to the matrix material, and then to the sensingelement, the device being removed from the liquid by means of thestring or line for reading of the temperature after thetemperature of the liquid at the desired level has been measured.
