METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR JETGAS IMPINGEMENT QUENCHINGAbstractMethod and apparatus is provided for quenching a metalworkpiece by an inert gas at ambient temperature. Jet streamsof gas coolant at high velocity and flow rates are directed ina balanced arrangement against opposing workpiece sides and thejets are correlated to the thickness of the workpiece sectionsto achieve uniform cooling rates with minimal workpiece distor-tion. A flow straightening grid in combination with a variablesized aperture plate achieves the desired jet streams in anadjustable plenum arrangement which directs the streams againstthe top and bottom surfaces of the workpiece.
