PROCESS FOR THE IMMOBILIZATION OF NUCLEAR WASTE IN A BOROSILICATE GLASS

The invention relates to a process for the immobilization of nuclearwaste in a borosilicate glass, the process comprising mixing:a silica-based gel precursor,a concentration aqueous solution of a boron compound, andconcentrated aqueous solutions of the other constituents of the finalglass, i.e. a solution of the waste to be treated and a solution of the vitrificationadjuvant,with vigorous mixing at a temperature of about 20° to 80°C.The said mixture has an acid pH of between 2.5 and 3.5, and the saidmixture is dried, calcined at between 300° and 500°C and then melted. Theinvention is particularly applied to the treatment of solutions of nuclear waste,especially to solutions of fission products.
