Abstract of the DisclosureIn the system and method of this invention, a dataprocessing system is dynamically configured during IPL(initial program load) time. All of the entities of thedata processing system, including physical and logicaldevices, are represented as objects in an object orienteddatabase. The object oriented database also contains anobject class of rules which define the sequence of eventsthat are needed in order to configure the system. Anumber of methods are defined to perform specificfunctional operations on the objects. A configurationmanager invokes the appropriate method to performoperations on the objects according to the rules. Theobjects are dynamically defined, configured, started,stopped, unconfigured, and undefined independent ofwhether the objects represent physical or logicalentities. In this way, both physical and logicalentities are configured in a consistent and similarfashion.
