A device for explosively driving a flyer plate toward a target comprises a plate-ring assembly and an opening in a support between the plate-ring assembly and the target. The plate-ring assembly comprises a guard ring bonded to the perimeter of a flyer plate by material substantially weaker than the flyer plate and guard ring. The opening is shaped and configured to allow the flyer plate to pass through toward the target and to remove the guard ring from the flyer plate. A corresponding method for explosively driving a flyer plate toward a target is also disclosed.
