SURROGATE ENDOCRINE GLANDS BY GENETIC REASSIGNMENT

A method of treating a mammal suffering from a disease characterized by insufficient production of a peptide hormone, said method comprising a) isolating from said mammal endocrine cells which have not previously produced said peptide hormone; b) transfecting said endocrine cells with DNA encoding said peptide hormone; and c) transplanting said transfected cells into said mammal whereby said cells produce said hormone in said mammal. In an alternate embodiment the transfection is accomplished in vivo.
