The invention relates to an installation (1) for releasing trolleys. The installation (1) consists of at least one collection point (6) and trolleys (2, 2') which can be fitted in the collection point (6) in telescoped array and coupled together by means of links (9). Trolleys (2, 2') may be uncoupled by inserting a coin as a deposit which is returned when the trolleys (2, 2') are returned. At least one guide rail (8) of ferromagnetic material is arranged at the collection point (6) along the telescoped line of trolleys (2, 2'). In the links (9) of the trolleys (2, 2') there are locking members (18) fitted with a permanent magnet (19) and having a projection (20) designed to engage in the locking slot (15) of the links (9). The locking members (18) of the trolleys (2) at the collection point (6) are attracted by the guide rail (8). Thus the locking slot (15) of the link (9) is free to accept the tongue (13) of a neighbouring trolley (2). In a trolley (2') outside the collection point (6), the locking member (18) is taken by a reset member (22) into a position in which the projection (20) of the locking member (18) projects into the locking slot (15). In this position, it is impossible to connect another trolley (2') to the free one (2').
