Pharmaceutical preparations which contain, as active substance, zinc salts or zinc complexes, are used for preventing damage to live cells by free radicals. Upon the action of ionising radiation, in the renewed blood circulation in organs following previous exsanguinity, and in the treatment of patients with oxygen, free radicals may damage the live cells, and also in isolated organs which are perfused with a perfusion medium, the live cells can suffer damage by free radicals. Using the zinc salts or zinc complexes, the damage could be reduced in all these cases, and in many cases the activity of the zinc salts or zinc complexes could even be increased by the presence of organic sulphur-containing compounds. Furthermore, there are described pharmaceutical preparations which are intended to increase the efficacy of such pharmaceutical preparations which contain organic sulphur compounds, the pharmaceutical preparations containing, as the active substance which shows a synergistic action together with the organic sulphur compounds, a salt of the metals zinc, cobalt, zirconium, magnesium or lithium or a complex compound of these metal ions. Examples of the sulphur-containing preparations whose efficacy can be increased by the preparations containing the abovementioned metal ions or metal complexes are preparations for the protection against irradiation or preparations for the treatment of liver diseases.
