A vegetable extract comprising (a) picroside I, (b) kutkoside, (c) other extracted vegetable material wherein (a) + (b) are 50-70% by weight of the total, and (c) correspondingly 30 to 50% by weight, and wherein the weight ratio of (a) + (b) is from 1:1.5 to 1:2 is prepared by a multistage extraction and purification process. It has utility in liver complaints and infections.
