In each case an extension (19a, 21a) of each jaw (7, 9) engages in one overhanging edge area of one of two grooves (35, 37) formed in the column (3). The fastener (1) according to the invention enables telescoping columns to be used, since the fasteners (1) do not protrude into the inner space of the column (3). Furthermore, in an assembly produced from columns (3) and bars (5) which are connected to one another by the fasteners (1) according to the invention, columns with two different diameters can be used without having to adapt the length of the bars (5). The annular grooves (35, 37) on the outside of the column (3) can be produced inexpensively in a turning operation which is simple to carry out.
