The invention relates to a method of reprofiling railway wheels by machining, the wheel rim first of all being checked for cracks and then being reprofiled while taking the crack depth into account. In order to avoid repeated checking with subsequent reprofiling, it is proposed that the axial position of cracks (2-6) and the radial distance (14-18) of each crack root (19-23) from a reference profile (13) which corresponds to the contour of the desired profile be determined, whereupon a desired-profile contour is displaced radially in such a way that it is tangent to the crack root (19) which results in a crack-free profile when the displaced desired-profile contour (24) is followed by a reprofiling tool, whereupon the wheel is reprofiled with at least the depth of cut required to obtain the displaced desired-profile contour.
