A magnetic tape cartridge helical scan having substantially the same external dimensions as a cartridge of conventional 3480-type band, but having a reverse configuration. The magnetic tape (503) is wound in the opposite direction counterclockwise around the cartridge spool (502), the recording surface of the magnetic tape (503) being turned outwards. The magnetic tape (503) out of the cartridge housing (501) to the left corner on the front side (504) of said housing (501) (in top view). In addition, there can be an angle at the right front corner (506) of the cartridge housing (501) so as to better distinguish the magnetic tape cartridge of the helical scan magnetic tape cartridge from conventional 3480-type.
