An element (1) for storing spent fuel assemblies is described. Said element (1) comprises a tubular housing which comprises a plurality of channels (3) formed from first and second elongated intersecting plates (8, 9). The plates (8, 9) are provided with a plurality of slots (12, 14, 20, 21) which extend in the longitudinal directions of the plates (8, 9). The plates (8, 9) are assembled in a cruciform manner by passing the slots of the first plate (8) into those of the second plate (9).
