An assay method for determining the presence of dibromonitrilopropionamide in a sample, which comprises adding to the sample, under alkaline conditions and in the presence of magnesium ions, an aniline compound or phenol which produces a color; and observe the resulting color. Suitable reactants may be formulated as a kit, for example, when the catechol is used as phenolic compound.
