A process and a device are described for purifying combustible-pollutant-laden exhaust gases of a desorption gas-operated desorption stage (4) by afterburning, the desorption stage (4) being operated with a nitrogen-free inert gas and the afterburning being carried out in a nitrogen-free atmosphere to avoid nitrogen oxides. The flue gases from the afterburning are circulated as desorption gas to the desorption stage (4).
