The invention relates to a chemical process for treating bamboo canes in order to inhibit the cracking of the bamboo canes. The object of the invention consists in providing a process with which the cracking due to evaporation of the moisture content of the bamboo canes to be dried is as far as possible prevented without using primarily mechanical measures in this process. It is therefore proposed that the bamboo cane is impregnated, before drying, with a liquid, which replaces the water enclosed in the bamboo and is less volatile than water.
