A method for filling an FIBC (12) which comprises causing particulate material (6) to flow from a container (2) under gravity through a filling duct (10) into the liner (11) of the FIBC (12), characterised in that the particulate material (6) is caused to adopt a free fall generally laminar flow stream which over substantially all of its length does not contact the wall of the filling duct (10), whereby there is formed an air passage adjacent said stream (6), through which passage at least part of the air displaced from the interior of the liner (11) by the particulate material (6) can escape from the interior of the liner (11) without significantly disrupting the flow (6) of the particulate material (6).
