core biopsy needles automatic biopsy gun. The needle system comprises a solid needle (10) of elongate shape having a notch (14) near its end. A guard (18) is securely attached to the other end of the needle (10). An elongate cannula (14) is placed on the end of the needle (10) carrying the notch so that the needle (10) slides longitudinally within the cannula (14). A second guard (20) is firmly secured to the first end of the cannula (14) and the guard (18) of the needle (10) is provided with a coupling means. The guard (18) of the needle and the second guard (20) placed on the cannula (14) are designed to engage in the respective receiving cavities of an automatic biopsy gun, and the coupling means of the guard (18) of the needle (10) allow an interlocking / reliable triggering with the receiving cavity of the coupling means wherein the guard (18) of the needle (10) is received. In addition, a mechanism allows the engagement and disengagement of the needle (10) and cannula (14) in the desired position and orientation for insertion into the receiving cavities of a biopsy gun automatic. The mechanism is triggered once the needle is securely housed in the biopsy gun in order to allow a telescopic movement of the needle (10) into the cannula (14).
