METHOD OF OPERATING A POSITIONING DEVICE WITH A SENSOR GRID, ELECTROMAGNETIC DIGITALIZER SYSTEM AND DIGITALIZER DEVICE

The method of operating the sensor grid system 10 and the sensor grid system has a first inductor array 14a and a second inductor array 14b. The first and second arrays each respond to a movable coil 18 that carries an electronic signal to have an induced sense signal. The method includes a first step of determining an expected position of the coil with respect to the array of inductors. The next step is to select an inductor pair located near the expected location. The third step measures a signal induced in the inductor pair, and the fourth step determines an additional inductor that needs to be measured to interpolate the actual position of the coil based on the measuring step. The fifth step measures a signal induced in the determined additional inductor, and the sixth step calculates and reports the actual position of the coil based on the results of the first and second pre-stage stages. In particular, the inductor pair and the additional inductor include all the inductors required to estimate the actual position of the coil, and do not include any inductors that are not necessary to estimate the actual position of the coil.
