We have found that optical fibers (eg 33) of silica doped with germanium, aluminum and rare earths (eg Er) can be very sensitive to hydrogen-promoted attenuation changes. For example, at 20 ° C., there will be a 10 6 times greater loss growth than standard single mode fibers. We believed that fibers of transition metal-doped silica could cause large hydrogen promoted attenuation changes. In many environments (eg amplifier fibers, attenuator fibers), significant changes in attenuation of the optical fiber are not desirable. We can see that the change can be significantly removed by preliminary hydrogen-gathering material and / or "sealed" fiber coating. It is presently suitable for providing silica coating materials with hydrogen keters, and also provides a "sealed" fiber coating. The containment of fibers with a certain amount of gathering material (eg, ErFe 2 ) in a sealed seal is also sealed.
