New mercaptoacyl derivatives of substituted prolines which have the general formula IMAGE or salts thereof may be used as hypotensive agents. In the formula X-R1 group is located at the 3- or 4- position of the proline ring; X is oxygen or sulfur; R is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R1 is lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl, phenyl-lower alkylene, or substituted phenyl-lower alkylene; R2 and R3 are independently selected from hydrogen, lower alkyl and trifluoromethyl; R4 is hydrogen, IMAGE or IMAGE R5 is lower alkyl, phenyl, or phenyl-lower alkylene; and n is 0, 1 or 2.
