This improved direct positive photographic material has at least one non-prefogged, internal latent image forming silver halide emulsion layer on a support. This direct positive photographic material is specified to contain at least one FR cpd. which can release, upon development of silver halide, a fogging agent, a development accelerator or a precursor thereof according to the amt. of developed silver. The FR cpd. is represented by the general formulae (1), (2) or (3). Cp-(TIME)n-FA (1), BALL-Cp-(TIME)n-FA (2), RED-(TIME)n-FA (3) where Cp is the coupler residual gp., which can carry out the coupling reaction with the oxide body of the aromatic primary amine developer; TIME is the timing group which releases FA upon sepn. from Cp (or RED in (3)) in the coupling reaction; FA represents a fogging agent or a development accelerator which produces the fogging core which accelerates development by reacting with the silver halide during development; n=0 or 1. BALL represents a non-diffusive group which can be sepd. from Cp by the coupling reaction with the oxide body of the aromatic primary amine developer. RED represents a residual gp. of the cpds. which can carry out redox reactions with the oxide body of the aromatic primary amine developer. The process comprises (i) imagewise exposing the direct positive photographic material, (ii) processing it with a surface developer, (iii) fogging, (iv) development simultaneously with, and/or subsequent to, the fogging treatment. Fogging treatment is carried out by fogging with light in the presence of a fogging core producing agent. The development is carried out at pH 11.5.
