A projectile or shell is used against armoured targets which are equipped with active armour. The shell has a twin hollow charge loading (2, 5). The armour has a splinter generator (20) for use against conventional twin hollow charge shells. On impact of the shell with the target (19) the first charge (2) activates the splinter generator (20). The shell is surrounded by an inflatable layer or bag (15). On impact, the forward impact activates a gas generator (13) positioned inside the hollow charge, which inflates the bag (15). Splinters (21) impact against the bag (15) which has two electrically conducting layers. When a splinter (21) passes through the bag, the main charge (7) is triggered electronically. The hollow charge spike has time to form before the splinters disrupt it. ADVANTAGE - The shell can be used against active armoured targets of the splinter generating type where conventional twin hollow charge shells would not be successful.
