The sleeves used have a bore whose width is less than the dia. on the cable, the sleeve is raised first to a higher temp. than room temp. and is then fitted over a spreader mandrel, immediately after which it is fitted over the glue-coated cable end. ADVANTAGE - Method has a short cycle. In an example, single or multiple-conductor PVC-covered cable (1) requiring an unplasticised PVC sleeve (10) to be fitted on at a specific position (3). The internal dia of the sleeve (10) is less than the outer dia. of the cable (1) e.g. by 0.2mm. Adhesive is applied to the positon (3) and the sleeve (10) is placed over an expanding mandrel (20). To make this possible the bore of the sleeve is widened by heating to about 100 deg.C before it is fitted on the spreader tool (20) which has a tapered dia. The bore is increased by 0.6mm and the sleeve is positioned over the point (3). The heated sleeve has a low thermal capacity and rapidly cools down. It shrinks accordingly in a few secs. and provides a firm bond. (1-4/4)
