Prodn. is of bright-coloured indene-coumarone or hydrocarbon resins (I) from coal tar fractions contg. unsatd. hydrocarbons or corresp. petrochemical cracking fractions. Mixt. obtd. by cationic polymerisation is mixed with a small amt. of hydride cpd. (II) at 20-120 deg.C, and the unused (II), together with the prods. obtd. from the brightening process are removed by washing with water and/or neutralisation. Pref. (II) is LiAlH4, NaAlH4, NaBH4, LiBH4, a borane, e.g. bis-(3-methyl-but-2-yl)-borane, or a borane adduct, e.g. dimethyl- or diethyl-amineborane, in amts. of 0.001-1 (pref. 0.01-0.17) wt.% w.r.t. reaction mixt. Before treatment with (II), the polymerisation mixt. is partly neutralised to about 5% residual acidity. Pref., treatment is for 10-20 mins. at 40-80 deg.C, until there is no further increase in brightness, and the mixt. is then washed with water or neutralised with Ca(OH)2 or ammonia gas, and distilled to remove unreactive components, residual monomers and oligomers. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of adhesives, paints, printing ink and binders for paper, and as modifiers for plastics. Provides a simple, rapid, cheap process for improving the brightness of (I) without additional process
