The positioning device maintains a workpiece holder or tool (18) in a desired location by a number of adjustable elements (1) that are positioned around the sides of the holder or tool. Each element has a block (2) that locates between a fixed frame (10) and the tool or workpiece (18). On one side the block is supported on linear ball bearing guides (14) in which the balls are captive within a recess (36). On the other side is a piston-like element (11) with a domed surface that reacts against the load force (F1). The piston is supported by a pressurised fluid chamber. ADVANTAGE - Few components for reliable operation.
