Crimp monitor and fault detector - monitors mechanical and electrical stability of crimp connection during crimping and measures deviation from target value

The crimping tool (12) of a crimping machine crimps an electric metal plate contact element (4) to an electric wire (9). The mechanical and electrical stability of the crimp connection is monitored during crimping. The machine works continuously on a production line. By measuring distance, a target value deviation is measured and signalised. Thus, displacement of the contact element material and/or the wire material perpendicular to the direction of movement of the tool (12) in the wire axial direction is measured. A scanning device (20) picks up a marking and/or an edge (19) of the contact element (4) with a light beam (21) running perpendicular to the wire direction. The resulting signals are analysed in an analyser (22) opposite the scanner (20). ADVANTAGE - Monitors crimping accurately in a simple and inexpensive manner.
