A machine for cross-cutting a continuously moving soft and plastic material, particularly a tube of clay or similar, has a cutter which advances at the same speed as the moving material and in the same direction. The cutter is moved by the material itself. Pref. the emerging tubing (12) is cut by a system mounted so as to move along a track (19). The tubing (12) passes out inside a ring (21) which has four freely revolving guide rollers (23). A ring (25) turns in the annular space (26) between the extrusion (12) and the hole (22) in the ring (21); it is driven (28) to and fro (29) by a cylinder (33) and arm (31). Four pneumatic cylinders (35-38) have pistons (43-46) attached to cutters (39-42). When a length of extruded material has emerged and reaches the cutters a sensor triggers the blades and the whole cutter system advances with the tubing (12); at the same time the cylinder (28) drives the cutters (39-42) through a quarter-circle and they hence cut through the complete tubing. The system then reverses for the next length. ADVANTAGE - The machine cuts lengths of the material without damaging it. It requires only very simple controls.
