Prodn. of low weight hollow bodies e.g. pressure bottles - by moulding polypropylene@ liner, winding round mixed e.g. glass and polypropylene@ fibres, heating and consolidating under pressure
A process produces hollow bodies such as pressure bottles, pipe etc. where they are made up of two layers i.e. an inner layer and an outer layer of FRP. The inner body is e.g. extruded, injection or blow moulded and is wound round with a hybrid yarn of reinforcing and thermoplastic fibres. The winding is heated to 20-50 deg. C above the melting pt. of the thermoplastic used and is compressed and consolidated. It is held in this compressed state until the outer layer is made and bonded to the inner layer. ADVANTAGE - The two-layer products are well made. They have good adhesion between their layers.
