Rapid determn. of substances or their concn. in samples in a carrier stream - throughflow system is characterised in that the range of measurement is matched to the particular determn. being carried out by a controllable contact time between the sample and the detector, with or without previous introduction of a catalyst. The contact time can be adjusted e.g. by providing controllable carrier stream vols. or controllable sample vols.. A suitable appts. has sample and carrier stream flow lines (plain) and signal and control leads (dotted). The carrier stream pump is adjustable and flow-injection-analysis pump and tandem-mounted film-injection-analysis pumps are adjustable to match the contact time of the reagent to be determined (opt. after passage through catalyst station) to the detector by varying the carrier stream flow rate and the injected sample vol.. The detector is e.g. a biosensor. Several detectors, each with previously situated catalyst station, may be provided. USE/ADVANTAGE - The provision of controllable contact times with the detector allows rapid determn. of reagents present in a sample over very wide ranges of concn. without use of complex appts..
