The side aggregates (14,17,18) can swing in towards the centre of the machine or outwards from it under the control of a safety device (16) comprising two hydraulic rams. This device is activated by sensors which emit signals when the machine comes into contact with an obstacle (8), causing the rams to retract the appropriate aggregate. After the obstacle has been bypassed other signals are emitted activating the rams to reinstate the aggregate in its working position. The aggregate comprises pairs of vertical narrow spikes arranged in separate oblong frames (17,18) which rotate. The rotary action is powered and operates by coaxial gears on the common swing axle. USE/ADVANTAGE - Works efficiently in heavy soil conditions, and the side aggregates only retract when in contact with firm obstacles.
