The appts. has a matrix of passage holes with rollers to give a pan grinding action over them. Projecting bushes (2) are inserted into the holes (12), extending round the holes at the rolling surfaces. They are of a material resistant to mechanical action, and their ends away from the matrix (1) have cutting edges to form material pellets. The bushes (2) are pref. arranged in rows in a rolling direction with a gap (5) between the rows (3,4). The bushes (2) are flattened (6) against the row gaps (5) and have a collar (9) over the matrix (1) forming a cutting edge (10) from the sides, to form a funnel (8) between neighbouring bushes (2) in the rows, at the gap (5) sides. USE/ADVANTAGE - The appts. forms the crushed material into strands for chopping into pellets, with a longer working life without increasing prodn. costs.
