Catalyst housing for internal combustion engine exhaust system with improved shell reinforcement - allows easier insertion of catalyst carrier and avoids production of damaging in-use vibrations
Catalyst housing for internal combustion engine exhaust system with improved shell reinforcement - allows easier insertion of catalyst carrier and avoids production of damaging in-use vibrations
Catalyst housing, has metal shells, with conical or flow smoothed inlet and outlet connections, and central section for holding a carrier body with catalyst coating layers, which is retained and thermally insulated by a springly mineral fibre mat. The central part of the shell housing is provided at least in partial section with reinforcement beadings, formed perpendicular to the housing axis and predominantly non-parallel to its circumference. As shown in fig. 1, zig-zag or wavy bead or suaged grooves are claimed, particularly where the tangential bead angle (m3) is inclined at an angle of 30-60 deg. to the major axis of the housing. USE/ADVANTAGE - Construction which is generally applicable to catalytic exhaust systems of different cross sections, requiring a minimum of constructional material, causing minimal damage during the insertion of expensive, brittle catalysts, and reducing longitudinal accoustic vibrations which can also cause in-use damage and are otherwise undersireable.
