An optical scanning head for such as bar codes (4) has a rectangular section housing in which these are lenses (22) arranged at the corners to receive the light generated by light emitting diodes (6) positioned in line. The lenses focus the light onto the bar code surface and a signal is reflected back from the surface. An optical element is mounted on the underside of the lenses. Located between the lighting lenses is a strip lens (20) that receives the reflected signal and focusses it onto a photo detector (7). USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides high reliability of bar code reading.
