New 2-alkyl-2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propane diol phosphates (I) are obtd. by reacting 2-alkyl-2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propane diols of formula (I) with P2O5, R1 = 5-21C alkyl. Reaction is at 50-98 deg.C, in an inert organic solvent, using a molar ratio of diol : P2O5 of 1 : 1-3. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used in prepn. of washing, rinsing and cleaning compsns., and of prods. for care of the hair and body (claimed). (I) promote the wetting of solid surfaces with water, and can be used to emulsify oils and fats in aq. systems. (I) have good wetting and emulsifying power, are easily water-soluble, are stable against hydrolysis at pH 2-12, and lower the surface tension of water.
