The magnetic floppy disc drive cleaning method involves using a built in cycle for cleaning the surface of a magnetic head (21). The head may provide double sided read/write access to the disc. The spindle motor (5) is coupled to a drive controller (40) that connects with the main controller (11) and this exchanges logic signals with a separate unit (23). The logic system operates such that when a cleaning cycle is initiated the drive motor direction is reversed and is operated at twice normal speed to displace particles.
