The input shaft is divided into solid and hollow portions so that power from the engine can be applied through either of two clutches (K1,K2). The first gear ratio is preselected automatically by setting of the accelerator pedal in accordance with engine and road speeds. The two clutches are coupled to a stepless transmission. A disc (1) rotates with or against the engine for forward or reverse drive, with ratio determined by axial displacements (X1,X2) of prim. and sec. discs under hydraulic pressure subject to electronic control. ADVANTAGE - Engine can be operated at favourable points along optimal characteristic with guaranteed transmission ratio changes free from jerking.
