Prodn. of light-coloured lower alkyl alpha-sulpho-fatty ester salts (I) comprises sulphonation of fatty acids or lower alkyl esters of formula (II) R1COOR2 in the presence of thiodiglycol esters (III), followed by neutralisation with aq. base. In (II), R1CO is 6-22 C acyl; and R2 is H or 1-4 C alkyl. More specifically, R1CO is 12-18 C acyl. Pref., (III) is of the formula R3CO-O-CH2CH2-S-CH2CH2O-COR3 (IIIA) where R3CO is 2-22 C acyl; and is used in amts. of 0.01-1 (wt.)% w.r.t. (II). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used in washing, dish washing and cleaning agents and hair and body care prods. (I) have high colour quality and good detergent properties, since (III) inhibits oxidn. by sulphur trioxide.
