The ship has a cargo hold (2) with a cargo hold shaft (4) which is vertically moveable and may be locked at varying heights. The shaft consists of transverse and longitudinal walls, and is closed at the top by a hatchway cover (5). The shaft completely fills the hatchway opening in the weather deck (14). The shaft extends from the inner base (11), or a deck above it, to project over the weather deck. Seals (9) are located around the shaft in the weather deck. The shaft is guided by slide rollers (7). It is moved by working cylinders (6), which are located within the shaft, and press against the inner bottom.
