Sealant material swellable upon contact with water, esp. for sealing joints or evening out dimensional alterations in structural or civil engineering, obtd. by polymerising a reaction mixt. (A) comprising water-soluble or miscible (meth)acrylic acid monomers or derivs, thereof, esp. their amides, aminoesters or hydroxyesters, or mixts. of these derivs. with the acid monomers and an aq. high polymeric material (polymer dispersion of polymer latex) dispersion, is characterised by the addn. of pref. 1-30 (1.5-10)% (w.r.t. monomers in (A)) crosslinking (meth)acrylic acid deriv. monomers contg. several unsatd. gps. per mole to (A). USE/ADVANTAGE - The material allows determined alterations in the swelling vol. to be made, thereby enabling the swelling behaviour to be controlled.
