Splitter-type change-speed gearbox with layshafts - has middle of three forward speeds giving straight drive and idle gear of adjacent lower speed on respective layshaft
The gearbox input shaft is coupled to the output shaft via one of two gearbox sections, each section has a gear train with idler gear coupled to its respective shaft via a synchronising clutch. Each section has three forward speeds, one of which gives a straight drive with 1:1 ratio. The middle one (IV) of the three speeds gives the straight drive. The idler gear (13) of the gear train (D) in the adjacent lower-ratio speed (III) is mounted on the layshaft (31) of the respective gearbox section (3), and is coupled to that (7) of the other section (4) by the synchronising clutch (15) which is used to engage the higher-ratio gear train (V) adjacent to the middle one. USE/ADVANTAGE - Multi-ratio gearbox with reduced number of gearwheels necessary to provide the forward speeds.
