A spindle (7) of the head is lowered into engagement with the bore of a fixed cutting fluid feed unit (1) to allow cutting fluid to be fed through the spindle and distributed to the tools in other spindles. At the bottom end of the spindle is a clearance which acts as a gap seal (3) because of the pressurised air film generated by the spindle rotation. Just above the gap seal (3) is a chamber (4) allowing leakage past the seal to drain off at atmospheric pressure. The chamber (4) is sealed off from the spindle bearing and drive (8) by a second gap seal (5). USE/ADVANTAGE - Multispindle drilling head incorporates seal with unlimited life and head can be used with or without cutting fluid supply.
